Historically, Belper had its first market in 1739 the same year that the River Derwent froze over and a football match was played on it at Belper! At that time, the Jodrell family were Lords of the Manor, which afforded the right to hold a market in the town, although it was really just a large village at that time, with about 500 residents. The Jodrells who owned the Market Place eventually sold it to Belper Urban District Council after the Second World War.

Nowadays the Market is held on the second Saturday of every month, excluding January. It is held on Belper’s historic Market Place from 8.30am – 1pm. We have a wide variety of local food producers, including local cheeses, honey, bread, brownies and cakes, pies, fish as well as local wood and woollen crafts, handmade soaps and both fresh and dried flowers. This is a quality market showcasing fine foods and goods from around the County.
